Shades Of '78 Boston's Lead down to 2.5 Over New York In East
If there is a great ballpark in the sky, right now Catfish Hunter and Thurman Munson are probably joking around playing catch, and Billy Martin is standing on the edge of the diamond smoking a big old cigar, and beaming from ear to ear. Why do I imagine then having such a good time? Because right now on good old Terra firma, the New York Yankees are playing very much like that 1978 team that the three of them were on. That team came back from a 14 game deficit, to end up with a tie with Boston at the finish of the regular season. An elimination playoff game was held between the two teams at Fenway, the legend of Bucky Dent was born and the Yankees went on to the big dance. Well the 2007 edition of the Bronx Bombers look like they may be up to repeating that feat as they have whittled down what was a 14.5 game lead by Boston to just 2.5 games! New York won their eleventh game out of their last thirteen Tuesday night behind a re energized Mike Mussina, and former Boston first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz hit a three run homer as the Yankees beat up on the Baltimore Orioles 12-0. Boston lost their game to Toronto 4-3 their fourth consecutive loss.
